What is the relationship between currency definitions and Face value/word form?

Search results often show currency definitions (for example, “100 Cents = 1 Dollar” for the United States). How should the currency denominations used in currency definitions relate to the denominations used in the Face value in word form field?

The reason for my query: I noticed that a Face value in word form was incorrect. In my edited I used a currency denomination from the currency definition for the country/period. My edit was rejected because the guidelines say “The currency should be specified in English” and the currency unit I used isn't English.

It seems obvious to me that the Face value in word form field should be able to use the terms in the currency definition, but that isn't what the guidelines currently say.

Can you post a link to the page in question?

The Face value in word form doesn't meet the guidelines because it uses “Thousandths”.

The currency definition is “1 Escudo = 100 Centimos = 1000 Milesimas” and my proposed change used Milesimas in the Face value in word.

Then we also have to translate cent into hundred(th) because it's Latin. 🤪

Cent is Latin, but it's also an English word. Even Frang ar is listed in (some) English dictionaries. But I didn't find Milesimas in any English language dictionaries.

There are so many denominations that mean tenth, hundredth or thousandth. Some appear in English dictionaries but many don't. This is why using “English” names is such a bad idea, as it can't possibly be applied consistently.

The primary reference we must use in Numista when have to use English is Oxford English Dictionary (OED, https://www.oed.com), and the secondary reference is Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org).

You can find in OED cent and centimo, but not milesima.

bjherbison's  right point is that there is no consistency between the language used in the “Face value in word form” field and the name and subdivisions of currencies. I would add that there is neither with the title of the coin. It has been proposed changing the currency name in the title to English, but not adopted: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic123394.html

Thank goodness. Let's stop trying to pretend everyone speaks English, shall we?

Same as discussion next door. There will be fields for both english and local name in the future, so this whole discussion will lose its relevancy.

Is there a rough estimate for when this will happen?

I have made a request to modify that currency definition according to the new Guidelines
