Different size lettering on the 2003 20 cent from South Africa, both Obverse and Reverse, as well as better defined detain on some parts of one coin in comparison to the other. Initials on Reverse are smaller and better defined on the coin with the larger lettering, but the detail on the numbers ‘20c’ is less well defined, despite the obvious wear.
I think some of the differences might be caused by die wear, but they are clearly different dies. The easiest difference to spot for me is the position of Borwa. Draw a horizontal line through the center of the diamond shape on the chest of the eagle. For one of the coins the line hits the left side of the “w” and for the other coin it hits the right side.
Not sure that this is anything to do with wear at all. I'll try to take some better photos, but this appears to be a much clearer example of a variation than many other miniscule differences already being listed (*i.e. A + B dies on Swiss Coins).
I wonder if our referee for South Africa may have a contact at the mint that produces these coins so that this might be verified. I'm already checking other dates, but only have a limited number of duplicates (100s rather than 1000s)
The difference is very clear, especially on the Borwa.
Hi Dan,
which software did you use to make that original .gif, I suppose? It's much better than those I can make with PhotoScape, or maybe I just have an old version?
