First it was the states, then the N.P.s, then famous women… how long will they keep this up?
Business is business….
I actually like them, a lot more than European coinage that is. Although I don't collect modern coins if I lived in the US and could get these in my pocket change I'd collect them.

I have 460 of these quarters in my collection including doubles. All from my pocket change. All at face value. That's the way to do commemorative coins properly.

Exactly. Unlike Euro coins some of which you can only get in coin sets you can actually complete these just by picking them out of your pocket change. Not to mention quarters have a much lower value than 2 Euro commemoratives so it's cheaper to collect them. Also while I haven't seen the famous women series the states and NP are in my opinion much better looking than the euro commemoratives but this is subjective.
As I said if I lived in the US I'd pick up an album and collect these just for fun. US collectors really have it all, they can find old coins, silver coins and nice commemoratives all in circulation. This is in my opinion the key to keeping the hobby alive, wish Europe would have the same but hey most of what I collect is dug up in Europe from the ground so it's not all bad.

True, though they were initially started to promote numismatics

i agree that doing it was nice but it's been going on for 20+ years, with a new series after this one (5 years) about youth sports. feels like a very stale move from the USMint

Yeah, I am done with commemorative quarters; and even though some very nice people want it, I don't want to see a commemorative dime series.
If you want a commemorative series, create a usable 50 cent piece, $1 and $2 coin to go with the dime and quarter, and wipe out the penny and nickel.
I heard that the former president would have preferred a Trump's girl friends series instead of the current series...

I'd collect that! Unlike most of boring current world coinage which will be easily forgotten this series would actually be historically interesting, a perfect example of our time. 😂

Trouble is no living person can be on US coins.

Ooooh! Then we could do a Clinton cohort “suicide” series!

I was actually thinking of writing such a response but was afraid of getting banned. Thank you Sir, this made me smile! 😁
And yes, I'd collect that! 😂

In the EU many at least use coins, especially high denominations. I heard countless times from first and second hand sources that in the USA people either throw all the coins in a big bowl or similar or even throw it in the trash. So they literally commemorate on trash in the eyes of many.

I like them as they get people into coin collecting. They cover the market from affordable pocket change to those wanting uncirculated set ones, proof ones, silver ones and that is how to do commemoratives. Plus its just 5 coins a year, its not like Australia that issued an alphabet set of dollars each year and 10 other candyfloss/Bubblegum dollar coins on dinosaurs etc.
Not like New Zealand with its overpriced NCLT tatt that costs like $150 for a one ounce silver coin and $5k for a gold 1 ounce coin.
Australia is a bit better, but its overkill - still the $2 coin designs are nice, if somewhat unecessary and bubblegum (Australian kids shows barely known outside Australia except the Wiggles).

if it makes you feel better just remember that the NP coins were to be continued until 2026 but President Trumps Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin did not submit the paperwork to keep it going… at least it gave us that contingency Washington Quarter that otherwise wouldnt exist.

i dont care how “unethical” it was, the US Mint team-up with the General Mills cereal company did wonders to collecting. Im still sad kid me accidentally burst the blister on my 2000 Cheerios penny and it toned

used to be, but covid changed a lot of minds. We had a surprisingly strong coin shortage and lots of places began rounding the tally. To nobodies surprise businesses rounded up never down… so people havw a new found respect for coins lol

Mexico figured this out awhile back, they now use their biggest circulating coin for commemorative issues, the 20 Peso. roughly the size of the Half Dollar. The US should go back to its roots and begin issuing commemoratives on the Half Dollar again. Especially since the 250th Anniversary of Independence, the FIFA World Cup and Olympics are taking place this decade.

As long as they can, or at least as long as the cost of production is below face value, because every time you add a coin from circulation into your collection, they get to keep the difference as profit. The longer they keep doing it, the more profit it generates.
It's a self-sustaining cycle. They start by releasing 5 new commemorative designs per year, people start collecting them, bank complain about change shortage, mints create even more designs. Rinse and repeat.
