Items on eBay

Whenever we're on a page of a coin or a banknote, we see that item available in an advertisement, especially on eBay, at a very steep price. That price is sometimes highly extortionate. My question is, who are the people that buy the item at that price? Do they really buy them at that price?

I don’t really think those items are regularly sold. In my opinion these people prey on collecors wanting to finish their collection, not wanting to wait for a cheaper coin. These are the only people buying coins for these exorbitant prices.

Or they might just be inexperienced, but for most of them, they just hope for one person to come along and maybe buy the coin. Kind of like those people listing „rare“ coins for like 10000€

So if I have the identical coin or note and I place it at, let's say quarter the price, am I more likely to sell it? Or I'll just also join the queue of the hopefuls waiting to make a fortune?

On Ebay, you can filter your search and look at already sold items. then you will see what price it would definetely sell for. I would maybe take a similar price, if you can wait maybe 10% - 20% more

I just saw a listing on Ebay for a common 2000 quarter for $2,000. Why oh why?

Exactly why I started this post to find out about the same.

Amazon is just as bad advertising rare coins at knock down prices when they are fakes and then coins that are very common and worth under £1 ar £9.0 to £15 each and if challenged they get very aggressive.

there are not only prices with seller's fantasy at ebay. Today I saw an offer (advertisement at numista page): ¼€ France 2003, Tour de France, 9€ + 1,75€ shipment.

I bought immediately.

Buying from ebay is an exception for me, but i got few Portuguese coins or a german silver medal for fair prices and had no difficulties so far.

I assume he didn't buy it for its face value ;)

Nice catch indeed! Though I'm always a little annoyed with the French for just pumping out those dozens of low mintage non-circulating commemoratives each year.
