Unlisted variations between 2000 and 2001 £1 coins:

2000 - 25 groves on edge which are wider apart and leave a smaller gap between the 3 sections of groves

2001 - 27 groves on edge, plus a raised line adjacent to the M of Man, which are narrower so leave a wider gap between the 3 sections of groves

2001 also has a wider obverse rim than 2000,although the reverse rims are the same.

I'm getting 28 narrow grooves on my 2000 and 27 wider grooves on my 2001.

It looks like it would take a wider sample to get a definitive answer on whether something changed between 2000 and 2001.

Have you also got examples (either in this date range or others) with a raised line or a wider rim on one or more sides.  Speaking to friends who also collect coins, it seems there may be some variation on other dates too.

The rim sizes seem to vary from year to year. I don't have a good way to measure the sizes. I don't have duplicates in the same batch (year + die letter + die letter position) to see if each batch is consistent.

(I'm not curious. If I was curious I would try reviewing images on ebay.co.uk. There are many  more IoM listings there than on ebay.com.)
