Background:
Modena and Reggio (longer form Reggio nell'Emilia) were two separate city-states in northern Italy until the end of the 13th century.
From 1283 the Este family were de facto lords of both places, until 1452, when they were granted the title Duke of Modena and Reggio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchy_of_Modena_and_Reggio
From a numismatic viewpoint, each place had their own separate coinage before 1452, however, the early coins are few and relatively scarce.. In our catalog, we have 62 coins in the section Modena, Duchy of…, and only 2 of them are from before 1452 (one from Modena and one from Reggio). After 1452, the coins appear with the ruler's combined title, with differences in they types (the patron saint for example) identifying the coin to either the Modena mint or the Reggio mint.
I propose we continue to keep all of these coins together, and add “and Reggio”to the issuer name. We can use ruling authorities to capture the few separate Modena and Reggio issues before 1452.
I will submit a list of ruling authorities separately.
