Cropping photographs

Having recently had my computer updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10, I lost the program that allowed me to crop banknotes, (rectangles) and coins, (circles), as it did not work on Windows 10.

I have sorted out a program that crops banknotes, and now need a program that is very simple to use when cropping a coin that is acceptable to Numista referees.

Can anyone recommend a program, as I have photographs of a newly issued Jersey coin, featuring King Charles III, which I would like to add.

Please make the program very simple to use.

Down loaded each of the various websites, and tried each one, then deleted each one as I could not work out to do the simple task of removing the unwanted background.

Therefore, being an old man, and not understanding modern technology, I have given up on finding a very simple system.

What program were you using on Win7 for coins?

When my computer was upgraded to Windows 7, some of the programs were automatically removed as Windows 10 did not support them.

Mostly these older programs were updated, but my photo editor program could not be updsted.

It is a real shame, as it was so simple.

1. Import photo

2. Click on crop and chose the circular option

3. Ensure the circle completely encompasses the coin.

4. Click  crop

5. Save

Job done. Cannot work out any of these new programs

No, I'm afraid I don't. I did ask at the computer shop about it, but it was then, that they told me it was incompatible.

When I found out about cropping banknotes, I assumed coins would be the same program, but it is not.

Was there “ArcSoft PhotoStudio” that came with Canon printers ?

 There is a program where you can crop (round) coin pictures pretty much the same way.  It's called Paint.net.  It can be installed from the Microsoft Store for US $9.99 or completely free from the vendor's site.  There are no use charges, subscriptions, etc.

A zip file will download.  Open the zip file to install the program.

1.  Open program.  Open photo:

2. Click on ellipse crop icon:

3. Create circle by holding down the shift key while starting at top center moving down to the bottom center. If the circle doesn't completely encompasses the coin, just start the circle again:

4. Click Image-Crop to Selection:

Hi Geoff - I use Paint shop Pro 5. I have had it since Windows 95 was around. Works well on Windows 10. Real easy to use and you can get it here.

Cropping coins on it is a cinch. I usually straighten up a coin image by rotating it using the rotate tool. 

Then using the crop tool as a square, crop a square around it touching the edges.

Then use the resize tool to re-size it dead square at say 2000 x 2000 for an image that is 1975 x 1990.

Then change the crop tool to circle, just go to the dead centre of the coin at 1000 x 1000 and draw out the circle shape until it is at the coin edges. Then crop it.

it is free of charge and is completely sufficient and simple.

However, I am struggling with the problem of removing the background - because the coins I am photographing now have been deformed in various ways for 2200 years and were not exactly circular even on the day of minting-PIXLR- remove BG ,,worked without problems for years and now decided to get rich (I understand it's a work),,   ,, I will be diligently looking for a simple replacement,,

I am preparing a coin for identification, and if I cut it into a circle, it would be an interference with its shapes:

This is taken with the new tablet I got and I prefer to stick with the above photos with the camera.

Do you have to admit that such a (yet unknown coin- with an Apollo erotic touch) cannot be cut into a circle?

paint.net does not work with pieces that are irregular, but recent versions of microsoft powerpoint are able to remove the background from irregular pieces

True. That's why I said “(round)” coins.  The Magic Wand in paint.net does a pretty good job with irregular shape coins if you tweak the Tolerance.

It's still limited to 2 pictures a day through VPN (change of IP)

But, you're right, it's not limited when you are in private  mode
