Hello all, I am apologizing in advance for my ignorance as I am just starting out with learning about collecting and in my case accumulating. I have a 1974 Canadian $2 banknote from my mother's collection that has a prefix of RD. I've looked in the guidebooks and online about this note because as far as I know, only 80 were printed. However, the guidebooks show an asterisk just left of the RD but my note doesn't have an asterisk. Can anyone explain this to me?
Your RD prefix is from a regular run (10,000,000) so belongs to P-86a on the $2.00 entry. Typically, catalogues don't list all the regular prefixes but rather give ranges (like BA to BZ) & you have to realize that if your prefix is BD it is a regular prefix.
The *RD is a scarce replacement. The * (asterisk) before the prefix denotes replacement function. Replacement notes were printed as a separate batch to replace defective/error sheets. The number “80” is an estimate based on the # of *RD reported over the years by Charlton (the guide that collectors have been using for years). You can read more about these replacement (& the other replacement prefixes) & their approximate values* at CoinsandCanada.
*keep in mind that the values are based an algorithm based on ebay & auction results but must be taken with a grain of salt.
