Quote: Mark240590I dunno, the weight and size all check out it doesn't stick to a magnet and it sounds the same if you tap it not really sure how else to check ?
The first coin looks strange because it's an off centre strike. There is an amost identical coin for sale on eBay right now with the same rims:
Quote: pnightingaleThere is an amost identical coin for sale on eBay right now with the same rims...
For some reason, the rim in this photo does not look very real. How did it wear down so much without affecting the legend? Why does it look so flat and even?
The 2nd is definitely silver - I have just checked again for magnetic resistance from what I've read it's sligtly magnetic and you can feel it if you let it swing like a pendulum
Phil I don't really see how it is off centre it looks straight to my cocked eyes
^ I really really don't think anybody would bother faking these coins. the second one just looks disgusting, bid for 70% of silver
and I don't think the 1935 is off centre
The flat rim of the 1939 is weird yes, but I actually have an ICCS certified MS-64 that has the same flat / worn rim (albeit only on one side of the coin)
I don't think the rim makes much difference to grading. I can put up a pic of my coin tonight if you guys are curious
The 39 will probably end up on eBay for melt value simply to bring the price of the other dollar down
I'm glad they've caused such a stir its been interesting
Quote: Mark240590so are these fake too or do you think maybe its a flaw as its always on the same side ?

I guess it must be ok. I do not have the 1939, 1949, 1958 and 1964 commemoratives, just the Voyageur dollars for me. I dislike them so much, when it came time to get one, I got a second 1935 Voyageur instead. I also have no sentimental ties to those four provinces.
I won this last night bearing in mind melt value is £17.odd

I was recently trying to swap with a Numista member on here for it but he/she wanted double the melt value in silver and it had been lacquered at some point and was peeling still an overall win !
Well my coins have arrived and I'm pleased with them I got these coins
For just NZ$6.00 (about 3 British pounds or US$4.50)
and this lot for another NZ$6.00
I know they're pretty worn but I got them for a fraction of the silver value. I'm keeping the halfcrown, Edward VII florin because they're better than the copies I have and I'm keeping the George V sixpence because I don't have one of those KM numbers, the rest I should be able to sell for more than I paid for the whole lot.
Bought my 5 kilo bag of coins for NZ$95.00, took out 350 coins I needed including 1 Edward VII silver Straits Settlement 20c. Sold the remaining 3.8 kilos of coins for NZ$91.00. So I ended up paying NZ$4 for 350 coins that I needed.
Bought my UK silver for NZ$13.00, just sold the Victorian florin alone for NZ$12.00.
Bought a 1 kilo bag of coins off my coin guy (he sold them cheap because "there wasn't anything worthwhile in it"), pulled out 6 silver coins, sold them for NZ$35.50!!
I just sold it on the auction site. It's just luck sometimes, if you list what some people are looking for you get great prices for them, if not, it can be sitting round for weeks and not sell.
Belgium 10 centimes 1862
France 5 centimes 1855 BB, 1855 W
Isle of Man 1 penny 1786
Spain 10 centimos 1878 OM
United Kingdom 1/2 penny 1720 (moeilijk leesbaar), 1806
United States 1 cent 1897 "Indian Head"
I'm not really sure if it is a bargain, I paid 14 euros including shipping for them. So is it a bargain or not?

Maybe it would just be easier if you told us why they might be a bargain. Personally, I'd rather have one shiny 2€ coin in my pocket, than this lot. Maybe one of them is a key date or something like that?

Well, I think the half penny from 1806 looks pretty good for it's age and I got in this lot for 14 euros, so that's pretty cheap, right?

I guess what people are saying is: No, it wasn't a good deal. Having said that, you were happy to pay that much, so you thought it was a good deal. Did it make you happy to add them to your collection?
If yes, then even if it was an over spend you did good.
If no, then it was a lesson to be learned not to buy similar coins again.

Well, I'm very pleased to have them, as I haven't got a lot of old coins in my collection I thought it was a great addition.
I'm especially very happy with that Isle of Man-coin, although it is very old, I still got a 237 year old coin from a country where you don't hear a lot from in my collection!
So in that view, I'd say yes, that really is one hell of a bargain for me!

There you are then. Money well spent. We all over spend sometimes and it does depend on the collector. Some collectors want perfect coins, others like them to be circulated. At the end of the day it doesn't matter, it is your collection not ours and you can always be more careful next time.
I bought the full set of the 1975 Vatican City coins with all the values (1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 Lire) They're all uncirculated and I picked it up for NZ$25 (around US$20) not bad considering this coin alone
is 83.5% silver and has a calatogue value of US$40.
Doesn't sound great? It sounds pretty good to me. I haven't worked it out, but $20 must be just a fraction of the silver value..let alone the catalogue value. Well done.
Quote: muralisLast year in a car boot sale (Nottingham) I bought around 40 Asian coins for 1.5 GBP, recently resorted and found this one only week ago:
5 li Japanese puppet states (1936)
You are REALLY lucky for getting that coin, let alone 40 Asian coins for 3 bucks.
I'm really interested as to what else you got, and if you don't want them, I'm interested.

Is the rocking horse crown a proof or has someone been whizzing it with a dremel? Even so, it's still a good price. I've been looking for a looooong time for a nice example at a decent price without much luck.
The Polish coin is beautiful and by a stranghe coincidence I was talking about the many attributes of this same coin with one of my Polish friends just this morning. I can't believe that such well designed, vintage coins are so cheap. That one looks to be a keeper.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

Both these things crossed my mind - however after examining it (it arrived today) it isnt a proof 'cos the edge lettering is incuse (i.e. like engraved) and proof ones had raised edge lettering. It hasn't been cleaned either. Just a wonderful UNC coin, I'm made up with my buy! Definitely worth the effort of staying up until 03:00 on a Tuesday to make sure I won the auction...
Haha - I wish but my coin dealer has this GIANT wooden box full of world coins and sometimes I get really nice stuff. The other day I picked up a 1867 2 lire from Papal States! For just over 30 cents!

Yeah it is, I got mine cheap at £3 but the CoA is a bit better but I would have been happy with getting that one ! They are a pretty cool coin, I want the other half annas too if I remember right there are another 2 E.I.C. ones
I'll have a better look on the pc after I've had my tea - just been abusing my body at the gym LOL
It looks good enough, what's the date ? I picked one up at the London coin fair intending to swap but it was another date so I've kept it in case I decide to collect date runs ! All I know is E.I.C. 1/12 Anna's are around 3/5 quid normally on eBay !
I don't know about this coin is bargain find, but definitely is interesting, and maybe rare
anyone experience about this?
2 mark DDR 1975, one is with reeded edge (normal) and other one is smooth, and walls of coin on second mark is bigger than normal, and about 0,2mm more fat than normal
and diameter is 1mm different
Maybe has been smoothed with any tool, or worn in circulation? I have a few coins that are reeded edge normally and have been worn out to smooth by usage!
No, I don't think is maked with tools, is too precise, circle is perfect, no have damage in walls, and how you explain that coin is bit a fat than other, and walls is stronger than normal coin. If someone use tools or machine to put away reeded, then walls be so tiny.
Is too perfect for any tool.
I just met with another collector from near where I live. He wanted to off load a bulk of a collection of world coins.
Just bought the lot at £25 for 8 kilos.
Looking through what I have got. Some nice coins for the swap list and collection and £23.94p worth of silver!
Will post pictures when I have a bit of time.
I've got Good Friday off. I'll let you know. Got a mistruck 3d of New Zealand 1933. Some South African pennies. Isle of Man coins. Mostly non commonwealth though. I'll PM you.
An error coin that only 'cost' face value i.e. found in pocket change, is a bargain to me. I got a U.K. 5 pence 2010 front left (with a normal coin of same year on right). Error is 20 degree reverse alignment.

P.S. I saw the 'Grading' Topic where you said something like 'what next; advertising on coins - you heard it here first', as a few weeks ago I bought a well-cool item, which has a website address on it ...
... but it is not good advertising for them as the lettering is a bit diffcult to read. I love the red against the silver colour, and it is a Knights Templar item, probably a token or maybe a medal.
