Watch out for fakes

Hello I have just seen that a lot of members seem to have some of the rarest coins, but exactly with those rare coins that I will post below you should be extra careful before buying them and always ask the seller for the weight of the coin.
If you already happen to have one of those coins in your collection you should check again if your coin has the correct weight as most of these coins being sold are fakes.
I was surprised to see the Numista rarity guide for example on the US trade dollar which is 70!
Most fakes are recognizable but some are very well made, and have the same or nearly the same weight as the original coin. Two examples I know of are the Tallero coin of Eritrea under Italian reign, and the 5 lire coin from Umberto 1.

On some of these coins you'll see large differences in weight, such as for the 1918 tallero of Eritrea which as a fake weighs 25 grammes and in original 28.5 grammes.

Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!
Saving up for a Yuan Shikai. Not rare over here, just expensive.
Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras
This also has many fakes.

It's not rare anywhere,

It's just so commonly faked.

I agree that fakes are becoming very common.
and stuff like this

Also I have looked up valuable and rare coins for swap and many people have in the notes section, "FAKE"
so this skews the Numista Rarity scale.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins
How about putting up a whole new coin category or "country" where we can collect all the known fake coinage? I for one would love to know exactly which coins to look out for, and what they look like.

Sounds like a lot of work for someone, but it would be great if it could be done.

Too many new coins!

There would just be way too much work on Numista if new fakes were added, since there are so many "varieties." What would make sense is a Numisdoc on fake coins. I am in the process of writing one about Chinese fakes, both modern and contemporary.

Here's a good example of a couple of fakes.

The top left is a coin that was only struck in gold, so it's probably a reproduction in silver.

The top right looks like a fake to me.

The bottom ones are probably real.
