Weird damaged coin listings

4 posts • viewed 163 times

When doing a little scan of ebay to see what sort of overpriced coins are selling 😂, I have seen a few listings that I don't understand.

There is a seller who is selling bulk volumes of damaged currency coins. For example, I am in the UK and they are listing 100 x UK current 1 pound coins. They have loads of listings and actively sell them for around £60-£85 per lot.

It is nothing to do with me but I am nosey and I have so many questions! 😂

I can't work out why they would sell £100 face value of coins for £65-85 per lot when you can just take them to the bank and exchange for good coins, or deposit? And the buyers, they are paying up to £85 to then do something with them? Maybe take them to the bank and keep the £15 “profit”?

And how does a business end up with thousands of damaged 1 Pound coins or 20 pence pieces?

Anyway, thought I would post here to see if anyone knows why, or has noticed them in the UK or in your country. 🤨

I'm way more interested in the answer than I should be… 😂

Too many coins, too little time...

Maybe a way to get rid of counterfeits easily, did you think about that?

33 pounds for a lot of 100 pounds, it's clearly the case

Uh oh - I may have upset the cartels now 😂

Surely that's not it - seems a lot of effort when this could be done much simpler through an arcade or laundrette or something? eBay seems too out in the open to do that?
