Coin storage

I have questions about how others here store their collections.  I collect by type, and I'm up to 3000+ types and 290+ issuers.  Everything I have is raw in 2x2s - no slabs or mint sets.  The best of each type is organized by country into large binders.  The duplicates are kept separately.

My question is whether or not 2x2s are appropriate for the more valuable pieces (say $25+ book value), and what would be a good alternate option?  With everything in 2x2s, it's easy enough to keep organized; it's all in the same place.

I do worry about pvc damage, but I also don't want to have to separate pieces out into an extra layer of organization.

Yes, 2x2's are appropriate for even the more valuable pieces.

There are alternatives, but they are not only a lot more expensive (acrylic rounds), they also do not add extra protection from the environment and are thus (in my opinion) not needed.

I switched to 2x2's some 30 years ago and have found that all coins are protected very adequately and are safe from developing pvc damage.

If space is an issue, 1.5x1.5 Mylar flips do exist.

Space isn't an issue. I have over 4000 coins stored in the 12 large binders in the picture. My US coins are also in 2x2s, in double red boxes.

My biggest concern is whether 2x2s pose any risk to the more valuable pieces. My local coin dealer thinks so.

I have been using 2x2's, for 40 years now. My grandfather was using them before I even started collecting myself. I still have some of his original items in 2x2's currently. So with 40+ years that I know they have been in 2x2's only problem I have run into is rusted staples. I too use to keep mine in pages and binders but have recently moved to double row boxes. Not as much fun to look at, but tons easier to move around if needed.

With my more than 42.000 coins, I can't have the 120 binders horizontally organized, but only vertically!!!!! Otherwise, I cannot access the proper coins in a whiff!

That's an amazing collection. So I take it you also store everything in 2x2s?

Not at all, only ½ of my doubles! My collection is in Numis plastic pages in some 120 binders…..

is a sensible solution. I have a few of them (you may insert pieces of cardboard to separate states).

The same company also sells

but I haven't tried.

If you live in the US, you also have the nice and cheap  opportunity of the

Someone suggested trying to make similar boxes starting from a cardboard sheet. I will try.

Currently, I am storing my 4000 and more coins placed in 2x2 holders in various recycled boxes and Ikea plastic boxes.

In the beginning, I placed my coins in normal albums, but it was difficult to manage the growth of the collection (except that you leave a lot of empty slots), and then there was the problem of the different sizes of the coins of each country. Furthermore, the album are not aging very well (some now are more 40 year old)

I hope to have provided some help.

Thank you.  I like that 650 coin holder.  I could buy a nice 17th century thaler for what it would cost to buy enough of those for my collection.

I am seriously considering moving everything to double-row boxes, but it's not as nice to look through.  One of the pleasures of a collection is to be able to see the collection. Or you are just hoarding.

Yes! I agree, that is one of the troubles with using the binder pages.  Make sure to leave empty spaces to be able to add coins without having to move everything up a spot.

This is my way to store my coins properly.

Of course I only have 38 binders, but this way helps me to storage my collection without  issues with my wife.

Cents are money too!
