How to remove background from coin picture with MS Paint

Inspired from something 13coinmike posted previously.  It's a lot easier than it looks once you do it a few times.

Open coin picture in MS Paint and extend right border to at least twice coin diameter:

Select oval tool and draw oval from top to bottom:

Extend left/right of the oval to coin edge:

Then drag the circle to the right:

Select the fill tool (with black foreground) and fill outside the circle:

Select the select tool and turn on the transparent selection:

Draw rectangle around the white circle:

Select the rectangle and drag it left until the coin is shown with black surrounding it:

Select the fill tool with white foreground and fill the black:

Crop to edges of coin:

It also has to be a very big picture otherwise you will get very ugly stepping on the edge because there is no blending.

In the case of a picture with a blurry appearance like in your example you would afterwards have to reduce the resolution to accommodate the image quality.

Yes, exactly.  Just an additional tool that has limitations but works well under certain conditions.

Well, that only really works for more modern coins.  It becomes extremely challenging for oddly shaped coins. Its far easier with Gimp which is free. Paint is too basic of a graphics program to use for these types of coins.  Gimp is available at https://www.gimp.org/

Actually I have Gimp too and use it for coins that are not simple circles.

I use this one free online tooll:

The one thing needed before input is that photo needs to be croped close to coin edge.

Shape number 13 is round and I use it for most of coins (except of heptagonal 50 pence). Always white background, .jpg as output so picture is ready to be uploaded to Numista.
