A question about sending coins to India

I have a question on how to send coins to India.

I'm finalizing a swap via Instagram with someone in India, and I want to send 30 coins. The guy says that I should only send 15 coins maximum, or in other words, send two parcels, because it would create a problem at customs. Is this true? A lot of people in India on Numista want to swap 30 coins minimum. Is it safe to send 30 coins at a time?

Thank you!

Amm…I have mixed experience…

I have a total of 8 letters from abroad till now and out of them, 3 were seized by customs.

Of 8 letters, 5 letters had route via Ahmedabad F.P.O.(basically Ahmedabad customs)and from those 5 letters, 2 were caught by customs.

and 3 letters that came through Bengaluru customs, 1 was caught by them.

So, 3 out of 8 letters were seized by customs.

I feel a letter with a significantly lower weight usually gets cleared but I had a letter from Russia containing 30 coins which came without any problems!

3 letters that were caught by customs had more coins in them but less than 25 coins each.

Which part of India you are sending coins to is the key! If the person you are dealing with knows his Foreign Post office(F.P.O.) or I say through which F.P.O. his letter is going to be delivered then he may be right…

As of now, I have two F.P.O. experiences. I feel Bengaluru F.P.O. is better as you can see more swappers in Numista are from Bengaluru City.

It would be better if more experienced people share their views…

I also had a mixed experience swapping with India this year. Out of 4 swaps:

- 2 of the letters I sent never arrived.

- 1 of the letters I was supposed to receive never arrived (the 3 that did were sent “registered”).

NOTE: that I didn't send registered due to cost from Canada, I notified this on my very first communication with my peers and that I would not bear responsibility for lost letters (I have an excellent track record within North America and Europe).

Based on this experience I decided it is too risky to send unregistered mail to India and thus, unfortunately, have to reject swap offers from Indian members.

It is a sad truth that postage systems in some areas of the world are not as reliable/trustworthy and I feel sorry for the many fine collectors who are affected.
