Hello,

I just added an experimental feature to translate forum posts. The goal is to facilitate understanding of messages in the forum written in a language you can't understand.

Click the translation button next to a post in the forum to get the translation in your preferred language (as defined in your account settings).

It's just a try for the moment. Let me know if it's useful for you.

That's a good feature. You have to activate it for each message and not only once for the whole thread, but it's definitely OK.

With this option added, we should start thinking about merging the different forums/fora into one … as already done with the referee forum.

Suggestion tracked here:

Just call me Bram

No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!

 ?

I already saw the new icon before I read this topic.

But how does it work - do you have to first highlight the parts needed for translation -

and then click the icon. Or do you click the icon and everything on the page gets translated,

or just that one reply gets translated. What about the topic title?

Asking as this does not work:

https://en.numista.com/forum/topic125973.html

No idea what is written, or the language. Thanks 😐

The dark blue icon just goes to light brown. Nothing else.

How many languages does it work on - maybe whatever is in that topic

is not on the list.

Maybe you should scroll down a bit, the original post is still present and doesn't get overridden.

Yes - I see it now. Thanks.

Would have been helpful if that was already explained.

Though as I mentioned earlier - what about the title?

Una gran herramienta (escribo en español para que podáis traducirlo, hehehe) Enhorabuena xavier. Aquí se ha comentado, y estoy de acuerdo, que ahora se podrían unir los foros en los tres idiomas. Creo que eso haría que no se perdiera información útil en uno de ellos.

Coin referee for: Andorra, Equatorial Guinea, Marshall Islands, Moldova, Liberia and Spain
Banknote referee for: Andorra, Equatorial Guinea and Spain

I just tried on a different topic, and now it appears in the same box. Thanks

So back to square one, which is obviously fine with me……

Super cette nouvelle fonctionnalité! Très pratique.
Pourra t’on ensuite avoir une option pour traduire d’un coup tous les messages d’un fil de discussion plutôt que de cliquer dessus un par un?

Déjà suggéré, mais ça vaut la peine de répéter la demande. Peut-être ça bloque le (les) serveurs ?

The translation currently uses the DeepL API. It has a free quota, then there is a cost per character. I don't want to “waste” characters by translating more than what is strictly needed.
I'll review in a couple of months, when I have more visibility about how many characters are translated every month.

Excellentes toutes ces innovations et évolutions pour le site. Bravo. 👍

Je l'utiliserai certainement à l'avenir et j'ai été agréablement surpris du résultat.

Thanks or implementing this. I used to use Google translate and safaris translate option to read posts on the French side. The only issues is once you press the translate button I’am unable to make it disappear afterwards because I can see a scenario where a topic especially with several long posts it can clog up the forum and lots of inconvenient  scrolling (bring back the back to top button).

Secondly can it be disabled if a user has selected their language in the users profile so it doesn’t do unnecessary translations because if you press it on a English post it still translates it “from English to English”.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

If there is a quota per character maybe you should exclude translating anything in quotes?

We have so many notorious quote quote quote quoters on the forum that it could used up in minutes by translating the same thing a hundred times.

Voilà une solution qui peut mettre fin aux querelles de clocher linguistiques

Dommage qu'elle soit payante pour le site. Jusqu'à quel point ?

Alors qu'il existe des solutions gratuites…  mais individuelles … pour traduire tout ou une partie de page, et qui permettent les réponses :

This is a very useful enhancement!

Can this be applied to user comments, content of field in pages of coins… (as I wrote here: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic125801.html#p102016)?

Wanted & swap list (euro coins & world coins, exonumia and banknotes circulated) https://goo.gl/AQjfKp - I have euro & world CC coins for swap.

ZacUkWhat about the topic title?

I have the Google translate app downloaded on my phone and when I go into the French forum or any non English site a bar comes up at the bottom where I can translate the whole page. Don't know if you can get it on a PC though.

I assume it's a bug, but if you translate a post containing an embedded image, clicking that image doesn't show the image as normal, but as a new page, you have to go back to return to the thread.

That page, at the end, has a link to the French forum -

from which I click on any reply and the translation does not work.

No French to English. Why is that?

My profile does not say I speak French, only English.

Then, how would the translator work if a member speaks many languages -

how would the translator know which to choose? Just asking.

I don't have this problem, it doesn't translate images

Indeed I didn't implement yet making images zoomable “on the fly” when the translation is done. I'll do that.

No French to English. Why is that?

The translation feature was broken as we reached the limit of the free quota. I upgraded and translation is now working again.

If you are logged in, the target language is the language you selected as “favourite language” (English, French or Spanish) in your account settings.

For visitors who don't have an account or are not logged in, the language is determined from the settings of the browser.

Why does the Translator say the language is Chinese?

I know nothing about languages, but the characters look

nothing like Chinese to me, more Arabic or something.

Also possible to have automatic translation in the users' feedback section? It's very difficult to suss out why someone was given a low rating.

Thank You,
