Hey guys,

I've noticed that some countermarked Brazilian coins are listed by their countermark date and not their original mintage date, and vice versa. Could somebody perhaps either list them all either by their original date or by the countermark date (with original dates specified on the coin page itself)?

One of the reasons that this inconsistency is frustrating is because the Brazilian Real is split into two timeperiods, and the countermark date falls in the second of those periods while the original mintage date is often in the prior. The listing being inconsistent makes it very confusing to navigate through old Brazilian coinage on Numista.

Some of the ones listed by original mintage date include:

20 Réis - José I (Countermarked 10 Réis) 1752-1776

N#127484

20 Réis - Maria I & Pedro III (Countermarked 10 Réis) 1778-1785

N#127330

40 Réis - José I (Countermarked 20 Réis) 1761

N#140215

etc…

Some of the ones listed by their countermark date include:

10 Réis - José I (counterstamped 5 Réis) (1809)

Wow, so apparently ¾ of my original post got cut off, so that's just wonderful.

The rest of the post showed coins listed by their countermark date, and even more confusingly, coins listed by their original mintage date, WITHIN the second Real currency list, which dates from 1799 to 1942. Putting coins dated 1778 and earlier in a currency dated post 1799, such as with

80 Réis - Maria I & Pedro III (Countermarked on 40 Reis, KM#203) 1778-1784

Why is it even cutting off shorter posts??? That's twice in a row that my message gets completely cut off :/

I just tried to say that having three different methods of listing countermarked coins is immensely confusing and I'd really appreciate work being done on sorting all of these coins by either one of the three currently used systems.

What are you doing? In the past you either lost everting when you did source editing or nothing. With the new messaging system I only have quoting problems but never lost anything.

If you just want to post links to coins use the auto-link generating feature. You copy the Numista number N# XXX and remove the space between the number and the # then when the cursor is at the last number you hit enter or click on the hyperlink preview.

N# 111728 → N#111728

I just typed my text and copy pasted several links. I did notice that on several occasions the link editor would stop functioning but I didn't really care much about the lay-out so I continued without it but for some reason it just deleted all the text that came after a certain point (I typed a whole extra paragraph after the links). My best guess would be it's a character limit issue but this thread is about Brazilian coinage so I hope we can get that solved first 😆

Hi,

Correct way is to use the countermarked date. Numista Guidelines >> Section 3.8.2 - Year:

For countermarked coins, record the year of the countermark, not the year of the host type. You may record the year of the host coin in the comments field.

You can submit the modifications directly for the pages where you noticed the wrong way and just cite the guideline above in the source.

Hello Pejounet,

I was going to get started on this tonight, as I notice nobody else has implemented the changes, but on every coin I've taken a look at so far, the dates are locked. What am I supposed to do in this case?

So basically just message the referee?

Who coined the term "coining a term" anyway?

Yes, direct messaging the referee should be first instance, unless it is possible to send standard modification request.
