France ecu c. 1715 Flip Over Strike?

3 posts • viewed 60 times

I have a French ecu c. 1715 that is sea salvaged (Le Chemaux), but the legends of the obverse are strong on the reverse, and vice versa.  Is this an unlisted type, or a flip over strike?

It is 42mm.

Any help would be appreciated.

French coins of this era were frequently struck over earlier issues of the same type (called réformé or réformation in French).

My guess is that this is what you have.

Thank you
