A friend of mine gave me these two photos and I was immediately perplexed… 8 reales of that period are usually silver or gold. Furthermore, the condition is way too good, so, this sure looks like an imitation, of copper. Can someone assist?
Thanks!

Hello! You are so very right,my friend, the genuine 8 reales are always in silver. Conclusion: As you already said,it is a copy in copper. About no value.

Hi Andi
Thanks for the prompt reply. I will pass on this information to my friend immediately.
Cheers!
👍
If it is a contemporary (i.e. 18th century) counterfet it definitiely has value.
If it is a modern replica then I agree with Andi.
No question. Replicas are common but it is Interesting they made this one out of copper. Mexico specifically, perhaps a tourist souvenir?
Hi again! Dear tdziemia,in theory you are right,a contemporary counterfeit has some value but,in this case,I strongly doubt this is an old piece because the coin is too well done. 280 years ago the counterfeiters had not such tehnology, their fakes look much more ‘’crude''! My conclusion is that we have here a modern copy.
Andi🤗
That would make a lot of sense. I might be able to see the “coin” in person later on today. I will keep you posted.
Thank you all for your assistance. Greatly appreciated.

I'm a bit late.
The “coin” is perfectly centered and perfectly round. It is certainly a modern fake.
Didn't get the chance to meet the owner of the “coin” but did talk to my friend who informed me that the owner wasn't surprised, just disappointed. Again, thank you all for you assistance and feedback.
Cheers!
