It's good when the number of rare or scarce coins on the market or in museums increases even just a little.

Gregory Edmund, an auctioneer with Spink & Son, […] said the findings reflect the £50 and £100 coins that were used at the time." Joseph and Sarah clearly distrusted the newly-formed Bank of England, the 'banknote' and even the gold coinage of their day because they (chose) to hold onto so many coins dating to the English Civil War and beforehand," he added.

They may have distrusted the Bank of England, but it is not impossible that they actually trusted it without relinquishing their accumulated gold purse. Many people with a lot of money keep a percentage of it in gold.

I hope the coins were carefully recorded before they hit the market. It would be interesting to know if there are new variants, identifying new dies in the process.

think they are all being NGC holdered before the auction, not confirmed though just what someone at Spink told me.

I am not a big fan of coin holders, but at least this means that coins will be carefully recorded and, I suppose, the photos and descriptions will be accessible online.

Economic historians will be happy. They don't need the coins; they need the coin data.
