Coin storage

Hi all,

Really curious what you do for coin storage.  I collect by type (I'm at about 3000 types and 270 issuers), raw coins only. Nothing in slabs or mint-packaged sets.

Everything I have is in 2x2s in binders.  It's all organized into the binders by continent → country → denomination → type → year.  I only keep my favorite 1 or 2 of a type and move the rest on.  If I come across a better one, I just replace it and throw the replaced one into my “duplicate” box.  Except German coins, I seem to have a special affinity for German state coins.  Everything is in a spreadsheet in the same order.

Here's a couple pics of what I do, which is probably similar to everyone else here.

My worry is that 2x2s may not be appropriate for some of the more valuable stuff - maybe those with a book value of $50 US or more.  I've seen what pvc damage looks like, and it's not pretty. Modern 2x2s are much safer, but I wonder if they are still problem-free. I'd hate to have a coin get ruined by my storage system.

If I go to hard acrylic round holders for the more valuable stuff, that kind of throws a wrench into my coins being in order.  Dumb dilemma, maybe, but I like that I know exactly where everything is supposed to be.  And that I can see a whole page at a time, instead of flipping through a box.

BTW, I have alot of duplicates.  One day, I'll get myself into the swap community here.  It took me several months to enter my whole collection into the database.

This should be an interesting conversation. Would love to hear thoughts on what other people do here.

Casual collector, world coins by type.
