British India - Queen Victoria - 1885 CE - 1 Rupee Silver; Which type is this? [solved]

7 posts • viewed 217 times

I have this coin which for which I tried to identify the Obverse and Reverse types and couldn't find a match in the Numista catalogue.

Coin is India - British, 1 Rupee - Victoria

N#3719

Weight: 11.54g

Dia: 30.55mm

Composition: apparently Silver

Using the links provided on the Numista page (N#3719) for Obverse and Reverse types, I come to the following conclusion:

(i)   Bust Type “C”

http://jfcampbell.us/india/victoria/rupee-obv.htm

(ii)  Reverse Type II,

http://jfcampbell.us/india/victoria/rupee-rev.htm

(iii) Mint mark: Raised "B"

http://jfcampbell.us/india/victoria/rupee-mm.htm

The issue I am facing is that there is no such combination listed for 1885 in the Numista catalogue (N#3719)

Am I reading this wrong or is this an unlisted variety or is this a fake?

I do not believe it is a fake, at least not a recent one seeing the weathering and details on the coin.

Your inputs will be deeply appreciated.

Hello! My friend, your coin's weight is about correct(a bit low),why do you think it might be a fake? No,I don't think so! Almost sure that it is a genuine one.

For varieties (and they are!),please take your time and check the page about your 1885 rupee in the KM Standard Cat.of World Coins:

Thank you Andi for providing the KM page

My problem is I cannot find a Type C Bust, Type II Reverse in any listing for 1885 while my coin looks like a Type C Bust, Type II Reverse.

So it comes to mind 3 possibilities

(a) my evaluation of the type is wrong

(b) I have an unlisted variety

(c) It is a fake. Even I think this possibility is unlikely.

Your coin is Type A bust, Check the width of the bottom panel and the design to right of it and compare it with the types mentioned on the page http://jfcampbell.us/india/victoria/rupee-obv.htm

Hi,again! My friend, for your 3 raised ''problems'' my reply is as follows:

1) These type of silver British Empire ruppees of India are very tricky to exactly identify,so many are the varieties(combined with mints) they have… There are a lot of your co-nationals members of Numista. Perhaps one/some of them is/are more used with this kind of minting. Let's wait for their opinion!

2) For me,it is quite unlikely that you have a new,not listed yet variety! But… who knows?!

3) For a possible fake(also unlikely for me,from photos which seem very real!),did you do the ''magnet test'' on the coin? Good silver NEVER sticks to a magnet!

Good luck!👍

Andi🤗

P.S.: I already saw that your co-national fellow collectors started to appear… with their help 🤓

Thank you Parimal. Once you have pointed it out it becomes obvious that since the second (lower) petal is fully (or nearly fully) visible it is Type A - 3-3/4 panels. Thank you again.

I had checked the coin using the “magnetic test”. The coin was not magnetic. That and the wearing on the coin suggested it was not a fake. However, two factors - the dia and weight being slightly less than the standard coin - made me leave some room for the possibility for the third possibility - that it was a fake.

Thank you Andi, your stepping forward to provide assistance is deeply appreciated.
