What is your favorite banknote design? and why?

Well, this question is classic, but let me explain why I want to ask this question (again).

I strictly only collect coins because I prefer the textured motifs on various coins and the metal that is the media of said motifs.

But one banknote makes me changed my mind.

My favorite design on a banknote is an Indonesian 5 Rupiah 1959. A relatively cheap banknote to buy, you can easily get it for $1 or $2 (at least in Indonesia).

The design itself or its security measure is not that elaborate - very much unlike modern banknote with its explosive colors, complex security measures, and its intertwined microscopic design - but the composition and the color scheme itself is reminding me a lot of classic ceramics, such as Zwiebelmuster or Yuan-Ming Dynasty Qinghua.

Zwiebelmuster, Meissen Porcelain
Blue and white plate, Jingdezhen, Yuan dynasty (1271-1368).
青花, Yuan Dynasty

The choice of the colors that are used itself is also one of the main reason of its beauty. The center of the banknote - the yellow flower, which I can only assume is a yellow gardenia - complements the blue-indigo color scheme of the banknote. Making a stark contrast between the flower and its surroundings. Initially this contrast will catch your eye from afar, making you focused on the comparatively simple design of the flower. Once it gets your attention, it offers you the motifs around it and its complexity, so that you can enjoy it fully.

How about you?

don't forget to drink water

Im not really sure which banknote i love the most as i have a few that also look good in their own way imo (1000 dinara 1931. Yugoslavia, 50 korun 1964. Czechoslovakia etc.). Id probably choose a 1 ruble banknote from the Russian Empire. I like the use of the structure on the design, how the year, serial number, text in general is placed. Text and denomination on the curtain, year on a board of some sort at the bottom etc., you get the picture

My taste for banknotes is a bit difference. This is what I like.

Like a work of art. Minimum text, with no other unnecessary designs added

Or notes with the world map

Or like this - How many leaders can you fit into one note?

And like this one. This note should brings you luck with that horse shoe shape design :-)

The 600 ringgit would be better as it is a very large note. Unfortunately my scanner is only good for A4 size.

I am sure there are more, but I have to go through my entire collections. Difference collectors have difference taste and favorites, and I am sure other would say designs with say Trains, Ships, Planes etc.

Tough question!

"By design," my favourite has to be this $10 from Bahamas (1965, 68 & 74) featuring flamingos on the reverse. I like it because its one of my first acquisitions, a tough note to come by & the design is simple yet eye-catching. Many mid to higher denomination from small islands can be tough to lay hands on in original condition:

By accident (or “demonstrating an error,” it has to be this One Pound from Scotland. (I like it because it cost me the same as a regular note as it wasn't well listed-stating the error in the title (2 mismatched serial numbers), so it was missed by most bidders & I really like acquiring errors- which are so hard to find/buy):

For a “favourite historical note,” this 10 Rupees from Ceylon really fits the bill.  I like it because the reverse engraving of a local statue captures Sr Lankan culture, the colours are impressive + the rupees from this era are all tough to acquire:

My “smallest favourite” note is this 5 Francs from St. Pierre & Miquelon with a 2 digit radar serial number 22322 (tough & in super gem grade):

I have really fallen for French banknotes so I think my "favourite large note" from that country is this P-154 100 Francs (I have another from 1986 & would like to get the first/original design P-153). But this will be difficult as there's so many more great French notes to acquire (from the 60's and earlier)!

ill give you my top two: the pre-series 1996 US $100 N#203423, Its design is both elegant and in your face, You know its eagleland spending power just by staring at it. The design tries to stay modest while also imposing its worth. #2 Mexico Provisional Government $2. Its so nicely designed and incorporates images that one can assume were a call to peace and reconciliation.
