There are several variations of square shapes (with scallops, angled corners, rounded corners, irregular) and while researching the question of square vs diamond shape from another forum I noted that the variations of square aren't always assigned consistently.

At the top of the shape selection in the filters are four general categories (any round, any polynomial, any with a hole, any scalloped).

I think that squarish coins are fairly common and a top entry of “Any square” would make it faster to filter in that case and side-step the question of what minor deviation on the corner changes a coin from square to square with angled/rounded corners.

Hello,

You can now search for “any square” shape.

Xavier

You can now search for “any square” shape.

Thank you for implementing this.

There is a problem with the catalogue (not with the search engine) that there is no distinction between square and rhombic coins, which differ in their orientation, although “rhombus” is present in the list of shapes. For example,

N#6840 - Aruba's 50 Cents is a square coin (found through “any square” filter)

N#6763 - Bahamas' 15 Cents is rhombic, but entered in the catalogue as “Square with rounded corners” (also found as “any square”)

N#7645 - Pakistan's 5 Paisa is entered as “Rhombus” and has more or less the same shape as that Bahamas' coin, but the “any square” filter doesn't find it.

This issue is being discussed by the Numista team, triggered by a forum discussion.

bjherbison: I am sorry for my hasty reply which I wrote without having read the thread's first message carefully. Whatever the results of that VIP discussion might be, I hope that the catalogue will be made more consistent eventually. At least the coins which have the same shape should go to the same category.

My two cents (and also an attempt to return to the initial topic): at the moment the filter “any square” has an icon next to it which suggests a shape like this □, not like this ♢ (call it as you like). So a naive user would expect no ♢-shaped coins in the results after applying this filter, only □-shaped ones.
