As you can see, it did go through a lot of them. Most likely these are Private Gump's coins he kept in his back pocket when he got shot directly in the buttocks.
It was reported today in the local news that a woman was hit by a stray bullet in her house and she got only light injuries because the bullet hit some coins in her pocket before hitting her.

I've always questioned this artifact and the story behind it. Why would someone have that with them during a battle in WW1? They were 50 years old and not circulating at the time. Surely even if a soldier had these with him for some reason he would have left them safely in his dugout?
I do not believe it too; how will somebody carry 4 coins in his pocket, nicely arranged in a row? Sorry for my poor english, but I think my point is clear.
