Hi
At the beginning of July (5th to 13th) I will be visiting Dubai, UAE for the second time (third time total in UAE) for eight days.

I'll be visiting The Central bank of UAE to ask about coin sets and new releases, but I have found little information if they sell coins or any other information.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

I've never been to UAE but after reading your question I found an article that says the CBUAE and its branches do sell some coins:

https://english.alarabiya.net/News/gulf/2021/12/29/UAE-Central-Bank-issues-seven-silver-commemorative-coins-in-honor-of-founding-fathers

“The sets of seven commemorative silver coins will be available for sale at the CBUAE headquarters and its branches until stock runs out, at a price of AED2000.”

Whether they still have this coin set, or whether they sell other coins, I cannot say, but I'm sure other collectors will follow-up with their experiences finding coins in UAE!

PS: In other countries, coin sets are sometimes sold at Post Offices.

Sadly that set is out of my budget although If those coins have been broken out of their sets and sold separately I would be able to afford them.

Lets wait and see what other users say.

Am I allowed to take coins and old currency onboard because I understand pocket change is allowed but I’m slight paranoid that they would get damaged (most noticeable  for high grade coins and proof sets) via bad Handling from ground crew so is it advisable to take them onboard or is forbidden?

Ask JoeVinu, he lives down there.

I never had any problems taking out coins from the UAE, you just don't tell anybody, that you have them along. I have 98 all different coins from there in my collection, most of them taken back as pocketchange.

Well that solved most of my questions.

The only thing that is unanswered is about the Central bank of UAE, how to you enter?

Do you need a appointment or just walk in?

Plus is there any shops in the gold souk that sells coins at reasonable prices?

Well.. Still struggling to find the polymer 5 and 10 Dirham notes but I managed to add the magnetic 50 fils to my collection as well as 2022 1 Dirham coins that I got from a exchange office.

Tried to but parents said no because “it’s too far“ and “you have enough coins at home”. But I do have a few chances at a few foreign exchange offices near the airport and maybe Travelex because they have a few locations within the airport and if that fails the exchange offices the U.K. might have it and hopefully it should be easy because I have the money in dirhams (paper ones) to hand over for the polymer ones.

Also my dad will be in Dubai for a few days on the way back from Australia and he is staying at a hotel much closer to NUMISBING so I would tell him what to buy and I’ll transfer the money to him to make the transaction.

I see, well unlike in Western Europe or North America, in most Asian countries, coming across change is very difficult due to perennial supply shortages, so establishments are not usually keen to make change or entertain special requests. it would explain atleast partly why you had so much trouble finding much in the UAE.

hmm that might have partly caused the change shortage as well as inflation, hoarding during the pandemic and I assume the central bank is slowly withdrawing the non magnetic coins because I have only encountered 1 pre 2012 25 fils, no 50 fils and the dirham Coins there is like  4 non magnetic ones per 20 I find in change.

Well I managed to get the polymer 5 and 10 Dirham notes at a exchange office in the airport at face, paper 50 dirhams, 100 dirhams standard one and the non magnetic 50 fils.

Sadly no commemorative Dirham coins and no coins under 25 fils.
