Please, who can identify, grade and value this ancient silver coin?! It weights 8.1g. and the metal is silver verified! Thank you!

What is the diameter?

Posibil grecia antica ceva stater. Alea au 8g

Yes, diameter would help.

But I think it's this coin in the catalogue, from Sybrita.

Now, the odd thing is the rim. This suggests to me that it might be a modern copy. And the grainy surface strongly suggests that it was produced by casting.

The weight at 8.1g is a little light but would be OK I think.

EDIT ─ As I was writing rnumista posted and he is right about it being within the range of a stater.

Dear Numista friends, thank you both for your prompt information!

Yes,as design my coin is close to the SYBRITA stater (but not quite as to be sure!). Then the weight is not around 10 g. as the stater has …

Outside Numista someone told me another posible origin that I now share with you,to think about:

It is a coin of the greek ancient kingdom of Bactria, posibly a didrachm(the weight maches!) and the coin show the beared head of Zeus(not Dyonisos),on the other side been the portrait of the Bactrian king(with a specific hat that have other bactrian kings also). What do you think?!

About the fact of a modern copy, please keep in mind that it is 100% silver and looks very old (crude & circulated). Generally, these copies look much better(eye appeal for the design) and who waisted his time to make a silver copy of a not too well known coin?!

Dear friend ''CAMERINUS'',it's you the 100% ''winer''!!! Thanks a lot! I wonder how you could identify exactly the coin's origin!?!

I checked not only the link you provided but also the original source of information, the book of Sovronos(1890) in french. There you will see 2 photos of identical my coin, with 2 diameters(one larger, the other smaller) and of a rather crude apparence, like mine. Due to the weight, can be the denomination be DIDRACHME instead of STATERE? Also, due to the 2 photos of the original coins in the book, please rethink if my coin may be a modern(???) copy or an authentic ancient one!!!

The caduceus is an attribute of the god Hermes, so this narrows one's search quite a lot.

The appearance is typical of a cast copy. The surface is not that of a struck coin. Let's hope others with expertise in the field will be able to either confirm or challenge my claim.

All kinds of ancient Greek coins have been copied. We see them quite often on this site.

The books by Svoronos are in the public domain. Here is a link to them on the Forum Ancient Coins site. You'll see that the quality of the plates are better in some editions than others.

Hi! Dear CAMERINUS your expertise is surelly somewhere in the top! I also came to the conclusion that my coin is a modern copy even if tested with an acid it showed to have some silver in it… As you prooved to know a lot, please tell me if as a copy the coin has some market value?!

Thanks again for all your help!

Hi Andi,

Unfortunately, modern fakes have little value. If it is an ancient fake (which seems very unlikely because of the thick rim), then it would be worth more.

Yet, there are collectors of fakes on this website. But there are no price lists of modern fakes. If a collector really likes it, he/she will give you more, but probably 4-5 Euros at most…
