One way or the other, one N# is changing anyway, be it the "old" one or the "new" one.
When merging pages, the one with more information and eventually better pictures is kept. That's why if you look at above request, the merge was done the other way..
The good thing with N# is that you can search for any N# (be it the old or the new one), you will be redirected to the same page. Do the test with the above and search for 248639 or 203715, both redirect to the same one now it has been merged.

Yes redirect is automatic and it works with both the use of the direct URL and with search tool.
Other existing redirect in case you use direct URL but only have the N# and not the nature of the item (coin, note, exonumia), you can use the word "type" in the URL like this https://en.numista.com/catalogue/type203715.html.
Numista will automatically redirect to the item page (here to the page "/note203715.html").
I guess it's not useful for most members and just for specific use but it exists if it helps.

The only type that seems missing would be the type 20 without underprint - listed on Banknote Museum but not in Pick from what I understand.
