No more cents?

A few weeks ago, I've bought a bulk lot with 400+ Canadian cents. Apparently I was just in time, because a friend of mine said to me that Canada will ban the Canadian 1 cent coin from circulation.

A question for our Canadian collectors: Is that true?

Interesting article, here in The Netherlands we also don't use the 1 and 2 eurocent any more. We've abolished them just as Finland and soon will Belgium do the same thing with the small red coins. That makes it even harder for me, as a 1 and 2 eurocent collector, to collect them.  :(

Due to the current status quo concerning the 1 and 2 cent euro coins. I did start to save them even knowing that I do not collect euro coins at all.

resuming, from now on I'll only swap a max of 3 each time. Doing so I'll make much more people happy. :P
Cents are money too!
britain are not producing the penny anymore after this year and will be phasing them out over the next few years which i believe 2014 is the date for the end. i've just gone through my penny jar tonight and got two sets (excluding the 1972 which was proof sets only) just for future reasons :)

What will be the last date for producing the penny? 2013? And will Britain also abolish the 2 pence coin?

There is also a Topic on here somewhere about the USA penny/cent stopping - here is a BBC article that covers USA and Canada and UK pennies, and someone in USA who hoarded 1.3 million of them ...

Are you sure this is true?  Wouldn't Britain then have to completely redesign their coinage as it would leave the Royal Shield incomplete?  Which would be fine by me, as I really don't like the current UK coinage (except 1 pound and 2 pounds)

I think most of the current circulating euro's are uglier then the current UK coinage, except the 2 euro cc's and the euro's of the newest eurocountries.

There's nothing intrinsically ugly about the current UK coins, I just don't like the idea of putting a bunch of coins together to complete a puzzle.  I'd just prefer each coin had it's own distinct image.

O, sorry for that, then I may have understood you in the wrong way.

While the Canadian Mint was stopped producing cents, all existing Canadian cents will still be valid legal tender for the indefinite future.

The USA has not struck a half cent, 2-cent, 3-cent, or 20-cent coin in over 120 years, yet all could still be spent at face value (which would be stupid, as these examples are worth much more than face value).
