Hi! I just joined today, and I hope I may ask a sort of generalized question about collections? My apologies, this is a bit long...
My father was a collector of world coins... ALL world coins! There was not a country he did not collect! He had binders upon binders of coins in the 2x2 holders all marked with what they were, condition, year and what that year's value was. He had some high end silver and gold pieces, as well as paper money (though he wasn't as into it so not very much)...
When he passed away two years ago, the collection was left to my mom, and she's decided it's just too much for her to handle, and so I've been chosen to have it all. I'm excited, but oh so overwhelmed!
I've decided to put aside the high end silver/gold coins and paper money for later, and to just tackle these binders of coins for now. But literally I have between maybe 5-6 thousand coins to deal with. I'm not interested really in having the collection as my own...
I'd like to sell it off, I've read the rules, so I know I can't here until I've been here long enough, and I've swapped... so don't think I'm trying to do anything shady, because I'm not!!
What I'd like to ask I guess is this... When I sell coins... (I don't think I have the patience to check every single one) would it be better for me to try to sell online? or to someplace in person? And if I do it online, should I sell by country?

Hello and welcome to Numista!
I think the first thing you have to decide is what "better" means. If you mean quickly or easily then your best bet is to find local coin shop that deals in estate collection sales. They should go through the collection and give you a price for all. Try several places and compare since at this point you probably don't have any idea of the real value of the collection. Some auction houses will also do this. If by "better" you mean for the most money then selling individual coins or series/countries is the way to go, either on a site like ebay or individually at coin shops, but that will take a lot of effort. Good luck with whatever you decide.
OH! Thank you so much for the link to the other question!
I suppose my thoughts on "better" was more of the "less work" sorts... I honestly can't fathom the thought of scanning in each coin front and back to get them individually online! Certainly the best price would be amazing as I'm a starving artist, but I know that it may not always be possible!
Thanks again so much for your quick advice!
