The new UK 50p was released for circulation today, but I'm confused about which version is for circulation. The news reports state the coins have been issued via the Post office (not mine though) and they show images of the John Bergdahl obverse, I have the Jody Clark one in the year set, but looking on ebay there are sealed bags from the mint with coins bearing the JC obverse. Does anyone know if both designs are going into circulation? There is also differing figures in articles regarding the mintage figures, one stating 1,300,000 and another with 5,000,070, anyone any the wiser?
Just found another article which states the figures I mentioned are the minimum and maximum minted, though still unsure if that is both combined or for each design.
The data held on the Numista pages is largely based on Royal Mint published information and, to a lesser degree, information from the Spink Standard Catalogue of British Coinage. However, as we all well know, things can change and never more so than with the numismatic marketplace. We should also remember that news media do not necessarily have all the correct information at the time of going to press. It is safe to say that a clearer picture about how many of which type of coin does or does not circulate will slowly start to unfold over the coming months and we are bound to get reports back from change checkers as the first coins start turning up in circulation.
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
"Designed by artists Osborne Ross, the coin features the number 70 with the Royal Cypher and the dates of Her Majesty’s reign framed inside the zero. On the opposite side is the fifth definitive portrait of The Queen, by Jody Clark, which appears on all circulating UK coin."
Looks like the mint set version with the big number 70 is going into circ via the post office. Very similar as to how the Aussie coin hunt coins went into circ here, except we had 26 of them.
I just went in bought a $1 stamp with a $5 note and got 4 of them back in change. Maybe you guys can do something similar? Every Post Office was different though, some got a bit narky about it, others no worries at all.
Have fun - Mike
