I have a Saxony Thaler part of my Thaler collection which all can view. This ambiguous coin has brought me to a crossroads.
Should I crack it out of its slab?
On one hand I want to leave it slabbed because it helps with selling but also it has a details grade and that harms the value while it is contained in its “tomb.”
On the other hand I am leaning towards “untombing” the Thaler because I don’t think that the “obverse repair is really that bad/noticeable. Therefore if removed from the slab it may sell like any natural coin.
The thing off putting me is the AU grade. I personally think it is not AU and if unslabbed it would be closer to XF if that. This would harm its value most likely.

If you sent it back in to get graded it would no doubt receive AU. All of the XF ones that I've seen look closer to VF than a nice XF coin. If you plan to sell it on Ebay or somewhere with lots of American buyers, it would probably be considered as an AU there too. It's only when you start getting to other countries where their grading scales might not consider this an AU or the equivalent.
As for cracking it out, I would for a coin graded details like this. I am usually a little opposed to keeping coins in details slabs and the grade might negatively impact the value more than if it was raw when/if you try to sell.

Quote: "geostring"It's not like it is a final decision. You can always pay them to put it back in another slab.
I’ve sent coins in and cracked others out but it’s a waste of $40+ Crack a coin and send it back out. Especially if I know it will just come back detials.
unless you have better plan to display the collection - all sitting together on red and gold cloth and take some pictures - no?
and you admit you might sell it later,
why lift a finger to reverse work already paid for?
don't take it out until you will make a mark-up by doing so.

This is actually how I store my Thalers and some other nicer coins.
(A sneak peak)
Maybe it would be interesting to do something similar to this except showcasing some thalers of mine.

Beautiful collection!
Thank you!
I have a few more goodies that I won in auction recently and have yet to add to Numista but they are definitely some of my favorites.
