Hi there .

my main interest in collecting is of the philatelic variety , but I have recently been given a large amount of German bank notes and notgeld . Starting roughy from 1850’s I believe up too 1930’s. I’m just trying to establish what I actually have as this is all very new to me . Any help would be greatly appreciated please . Current market Value isn’t a focus point on my research though . Obviously it would be a nice surprise if there were a gem or two in there .

If I were you I would begin organizing by separating the notgeld from the Reichsbank.

Then sort out your notes by Reichsbank notes by denominations. Examine your notes according to signatures & serial numbers (look for patterns). Once you've familiarized yourself with one denomination, then use this site or banknotemuseum to find out the P-code. Get a notepad to record what you have & look into purchasing some currency sleeves to keep what you have protected. For your early notes you'll have to get large sized sleeves. If you look on the link I provided (on eBay) you will also notice another link (on the sidebar) for "Albums & folders" where you could also get pages to put the sleeves in (if you should keep them that way).

Once you get one set organized & you have a bit of experience with your detective (note sleuth) work, I think you'll have more heart to tackle your notgeld. Good luck, be patient & have fun.
