Back to 2 questions: 1. A staff sergeant in the US Army Air Forces earned the Medal of Honor in 1943, the first enlisted airman to earn the medal. When he was discharged, what was his rank?

2. What unusual action did the same staff sergeant take when fighting a fire on his bomber the same time he tended to wounded crewmen and fired machine guns at attacking fighter planes?

1. Smith was diagnosed with "operational exhaustion" and reassigned to a non-combat position as a private.Discharged USAAF 26 May 1945(Honourable discharge).

2. Smith alternated between shooting at attacking fighters, tending to the wounded and fighting the fire. To starve the fire of fuel, he threw burning debris and exploding ammunition through the large holes that the fire had melted in the fuselage. After the fire extinguishers were exhausted, Smith finally managed to put the fire out, in part by urinating on it.
