I have a serious plan to create a coin related website, don't worry - it's not a Numista clone. I have indentified a very large gap in the market which I intend to fill.
I'm pretty technically savvy but it's mainly around networking and hardware, website building beyond the WYSIWYG type is outside of my comfort zone. I know enough HTML to be dangerous and that's about it.
Is there a better option for domain name registration and hosting than GoDaddy? I'm thinking I need the complete suite - domain name, hosting and user-friendly building tools. I made a website several years ago and Yahoo seemed the best option. Generous bandwidth would be a plus as I expect a lot of traffic. A free website won't work because of bandwidth and content restrictions.
I also need to monetize it but in a classy way. I'm pretty sure about how to work AdSense so that any banner ads actually relate to numismatics (contextual advertising). I'm not seeking to make a pile of cash but enough to cover the hosting fees would be nice. Both Amazon and eBay require established traffic volume so they are not an issue initially. Does anyone know of any other options which are tasteful, not intrusive and ideally paid per impression?
Finally, images.... other than Flickr and Wikimedia Commons, are there any good sources of high quality coin related images? I know that anything published by the US mint is public domain, does anyone know if this is true worldwide?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!
About pictures: if you have some time, I'd suggest to produce your own pictures. There is other topic about this subject. This is only works if you have the coins, obviously.
I got a friend to help out organising web hosting for me; his opinion of these companies is that they are all as bad as each other. I have a lot of images on the free images section of my site - it will be constantly updated with more images, so if it doesn't have what you want now it will in the future.
The images can be used in any publication for any purpose as long as it does not promote any religious or political ideology, and an attribution is needed "Image Courtesy of Waldercoins.co.uk" ideally but I'm happy for it to say Coinwiki.co.uk. If the images are on a web page I would also like a link back to my site.
I get my friend to do the html stuff for me but I think I will eventually learn how it's done. I have used media wiki for CoinWiki but skinning it was a real nightmare, so if you already know some html I think going down that route is the better option, as you would still have to learn code to use media wiki anyway.
