If you put one of the newer copper plated steel pennies into the machine would the steel centre show through the stretched coin?

Can't answer about a copper plated steel but he's a picture from a previous post about a copper plated zinc US penny.

It might simply come out incompletely rolled because of the hardness of the steel core.

There are many machines at historical sites in the US that elongate pennies with special designs.
They usually charge extra though.
