Only question: In 1939 a short-lived republic issued its first stamps. What 2 countries required mail addressed to them from the republic to be surcharged as the stamps were not recognized by the 2 countries?

Winner will be first correct response received at or before 10 A.M. eastern US time Oct. 8, 2021. If there is no correct response (must include both countries but countries can be split across 2 entries by same person) first response with 2 countries will win. My decision as to winner will be final.

The only short lived republic I know in 1939 was either the Slovak Republic or the polish republic.

If the slovak republic (a nazi puppet state) than my guess would be the allies france and Great Britian

If the Polish republic than my guess would be Germany and Russia

Only country I found that only existed in 1939 is Carpatho-Ukraine. So guessing Hungary and Czechoslovakia ...

Or the Protectorat of Bohemia and Moravia (another nazi puppet state) where some of my relatives lived during WW2. I have a few banknotes from there.

Stamps were from the Republic of Hatay and they weren't recognized by Syria and Turkey?

My answer :

Hatay Devleti (Hatay State) was a short-lived republic (From 1938, Sept 7 - to - 1939, Jul 23). For centuries, the region was a part of the Ottoman Empire known as the Sanjak of Alexandretta.

The first postage stamps of the Hatay Devleti issued early in 1939 were stamps of Turkey overprinted "Hatay Devleti" and surcharged with new denominations.


The first issue for Hatay was surcharged on 1931-38 stamps of Turkey. After 1939, the region was incorporated in Turkey, and Hatay stamps were no longer used.

2 countries were :

1. Turkey - (because of the above explanation)
2. Syria - reason below

The Syrian stamps of 1930-36 were overprinted or surcharged and used in 1938 in Alexandretta. The name was changed to Hatay in latter 1938, and stamps were issued under that name.



Trivia: In the film "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", Jones claims the Holy Grail is in the "canyon of the crescent moon outside of Alexandretta"

Great question. I looked for a few minutes when I had a break at work, but didn’t get close. Enjoyed what I did read and now the final answer.

You guys did lots of work and you are quite close, having identified one of the countries that required a surcharge. First who identifies which country was already identified and which is the yet unidentified second country wins!

Brink wins! France felt that Hatay did not have right to separate from mandate of Syria and the French commissioner of the mandates of Syria and Lebanon in Beirut did not recognize the Hatay stamps as valid. Thus, the required surcharges.
