No, I do not mean trading at Forex. This involves no money as far as I know. My initial reply was about going into a bank & withdrawing large quantities of banknotes (with the objective of getting a collectible prefix or serial number). It is not very productive & its not for everyone.
About a decade ago I was making posts about the subject of brick (1000 notes) searching at various banks here in Canada on our
CPMF. A very established dealer (& business owner) called me to warn me off of trying my luck at our banks. This was because banks can "blacklist" one (or red-flag) which can literally freeze your account. You have to know what you're doing if you want to recycle cash (withdraw large amounts of currency & then deposit at another branch). This is what I wrote about in the last post. The business owner who called me ordered bricks of various denominations & paid $ for this service (he told me how much but I have since forgot the figure & this was some time ago). He also used a line of credit & told me about those charges (so it got complicated).
Some banks also charge a service charge but I don't know how much that is (it varies). You have to ask. I have paid my branch a lot of money on a mortgage & have done enough banking with them to be able to recycle cash for no fee but they're not very happy/receptive to this. I have heard stories from other collectors who have had much better luck than me (& some who've struggled too).
Now you are from Australia so your banks may have different policies. You should check those out. Ask & be upfront about your hobby and what you'd like & if there's any fees involved. Remember, this is not for OLD notes but for NEW UNC banknotes. Sometimes they have provided me with circulated bundles (which sucks- but that's just how it sometimes works).
For older issues, you could ask them if they have any returned banknotes put aside in their "
Damaged or
Returns" pouch. Again, the actual terms may be different at your banks but that's what we call our older series notes to be returned to the BoC (& your notes would be slated for destruction at the RBA).
For bundles of older notes, I would look to auction houses or eBay. However, that's not what I would advise anyone who wants to become a collector of currency. I have only bought the odd lots of 5 (or less) in UNC on eBay. Check my
World Market page for links to wholesale sellers & some auction houses. I do not endorse any particular seller or dealer.
