on the coin it's written Pounds, but Numista says Liras? Just for information SCWC calls the coins Pounds.

I would vote for Pounds, since the Syrians obviously call their money POUNDS.

Hello,

From the Numista guidelines:

"If the unabridged name of the currency unit is present on the coin in Latin script, then the name of the coin should show the currency unit in the language on the coin."

... so it should be "pounds"

Thanks for the answer, which sound very logical to me.

Can the robot take care of that, since it would consume a lot of my time to make all the CR?

Probably the robot can do it, but there are currently requests pending from November 2020, so there is a long backlog there too...

I think around 100 changes was the minimum number of changes to justify Mr robot's intervention. In the case of Syria, there might not be that many actually?

Syrians call their money lira but put "pound" on some coins and notes for foreigners who can't read Arabic.

Where both appear, can I suggest we use "lira / pound". We're already showing both names on this coin, for example.

As per the guidelines, the "/" should be reserved for situations when the value is expressed in different units of currency:
1 Batzen / 10 Rappen
37 Rubles 50 Kopecks / 100 Francs - Nikolai II
3½ Kreuzer / 2½ Kreuzer

As already discussed, synonyms and local languages should not be used. Otherwise, we will run into excessively long names in situations like these:
5 Gulden / Rynskich / Fiorini / Forint / Zlatijch
KISS

Keep it simple and stupid

Today I wanted to access Syria, as you might have expected and Syria (as modern Syria) is NOT on the first roll-out!

How clever is that?

Local languages have to be used if that's what appears on the coin or note. It isn't a choice. We must use what's on the piece being described, otherwise this isn't a catalogue but someone's alternate version of reality. Sometimes things are complicated. A catalogue records that complexity. It doesn't seek to "simplify" it.

Hence complicated is better than simple? Strange enough I can't read the Liras in Arab, so I'll just go for pounds as written, so if anything it should be Pounds / Liras, reading from left to right...

Local languages have a dedicated field where they are recorded. Let's please stick to the guidelines, and use the English name in the title.

@Sjoelund: your initial proposal to use "Pounds" is in accordance with the Numista guidelines.

Lets change the guidelines to reflect reality.

No, I refuse to do that, this thread should trigger the referee, so why doesn't he do the change?

Because errors and typos are less likely to get through if one person makes the edits and another reviews them.

I'm making the changes.

Thanks a lot!

No, I refuse to do that, this thread should trigger the referee, so why doesn't he do the change?

Also because the referee may not always look at both French and English fora to unburry old threads if nobody tells the referee to have a look at such a thread.

Anyway, this is now fixed thanks to bjherbison.

Should be described as ‘Pounds’ - & the currency code is ‘SYP’.
