Uploading images... mint.ca

Hello,
I realize this isn't really a "New topic", but I couldn't find the answer I wanted.

I believe I read in one comment that Numista was given permission to use images from the Mint of Poland website (en.mennica.com.pl).
Is that correct?

Has Numista been given permission to use images from the Royal Canadian Mint website (mint.ca)?

If not, then what is the best way to obtain images to upload to Numista (if I do not have the coin to take a picture myself) ?

Thank you.

As far as my knowledge goes no Numista hasn’t got permission to use pictures from the Royal Canadian mint because I added new Canadian coins to the catalogue using the images from the mint and those were rejected due to that until I changed the source.
Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.
Here's a link to a useful numisdoc: https://en.numista.com/numisdoc/pictures-and-images-on-numista-141.html

For anyone who stumbles across this article, the link to the list of partners is extensive.
It is "double-embedded" (if that's a term), so I thought I'd try to make it a little easier...

...and then click on the black triangle in the section titled, "Built by the community".

Despite being a very long list, it appears to be missing a few... North America!

La Casa de Moneda de México
Royal Canadian Mint
U.S. Mint

Have any of our Administrators attempted to partner with these three mints?

And yet the catalog has many, many coin pictures from the US Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint and some from the Banco de Mexico.
Hello rsirian1,
I'm not sure what you are trying to say in your last comment. Could you be more clear?

1. Are you asking... How is it that we have so many images from these mints if we don't have an established approval with them?
To which I would be curious how we have been able to accomplish that as well.
2. Are you simply stating that we have many official images from the mint, so even if we don't have an established approval for all images, we must have received approval for these somehow.
Having so many of them, it would be quite spectacular if they were approved one-by-one.
3. Are you suggesting that maybe we really didn't get approval for all of them, since we don't have a partnership, and we have so many?
4. Or are you possibly telling to stop complaining, because even though we don't have a partnership for all images, we certainly do have a lot.

I was hoping an administrator could speak to the idea of establishing an official partnership with these North American mints so that we could use their images for any missing coins, medal and tokens.

Sincerely, Mosler
Hello Mosler,

#1 definitely. I too am hoping to get an explanation from the powers to be about the rules/guidelines for using images from these mints. Since they appear so frequently there has to be some "unpublished" rule that says it's acceptable. I don't know how Worldwide collection's submission can be rejected for using images from the RCM when ones like this one are approved (in the last month):

It's not acceptable. These photos shouldn't have been approved. Royal Canadian mint is very strict with their intellectual property.

Thanks for the quick reply. What about the numerous other coins and all the images with © U.S. Mint?

Last month I added 4 Canadian coins to the catalogue.
  • 10 cents centenary double date.
  • 2 Dollars Insulin non-coloured.
  • 2 Dollars Insulin coloured.
  • 50 Dollars 50 years of the Snowbirds.

I added all 4 coins without scans of the coin sometimes I do this if I’m unsure about which source you can add scans from or not.

After less than 24 hours of them pending I get a message from the referee of Canada saying this;

In which case I used scans from monnaiecanada.com for the 2 dollar coins. However I was unable to find scans of the 10 cent and the 50 dollar anywhere but the RCM so I used those images not knowing we don’t have permission to use them.

But I’m still scratching my head how the images from the 50 dollar got rejected but the 10 cent approved.:°

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.
After a little research I found the US Mint policy for using their images. It starts on their Business Guidelines page under Design Use Policies.
https://www.usmint.gov/news/consumer-alerts/business-guidelines

It has statements such as, The United States Mint will not object to use of the obverse, reverse or edge of any United States Presidential $1 Coin approved by the Secretary of the Treasury (each, a “Covered Coin” and collectively, “Covered Coins”), subject to the following conditions:
It then lists conditions which for Numista basically boils down to giving the US Mint credit for the image.
Hello,

The US mint policy allows usage of their pictures as done by Numista. We never requested any explicit permission, so they are not names on the "about" page, but the US mint can be selected as a source when adding a picture and Numista will add a clickable credit line for these pictures.

The Royal Canadian Mint policy doesn't allow usage like Numista, and I don't think anyone ever made a request for Numista.

So their pictures should not be used on Numista.
Hello Xavier,
Thank you very much for your engagement on this topic.

That is excellent news about the U.S. Mint !

And that is not so excellent news about my northern neighbor. Canada has such beautiful and unique coins that I wish could be shared with all of our Numista-matic family.

I am currently having friendly communication with the Japan Mint. I hope to make some progress and then start a new conversation thread with what I have learned.

Sincerely, Mosler
