French One Sided Coin, possibly WWI

Hello. I am hoping someone will be able to help me to identify this one sided French coin I have found in a collection of inherited.

One side reads ‘Republique Francaise’, whereas the other has been inscribed with the details of relative who served in the Army Ordnance Corps I. France during WWI, where he suffered shell shock. It has two chains attached which are just the right size to fit around a my wrist. This makes me think it has been converted into a makeshift dog tag, although I am not familiar with such tags being worn around the wrist.

I would be very grateful for any information anyone could provide.

kind regards,
Marc.
My impression is that the reverse of the coin was erased in order to create this improvised dog tag.

Searching for french bronzes of early XX century I think that the original coin is a 5 or 10 centimes of the WWI period. (https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces678.html and https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces698.html) It just depends of the diameter of the dog tag.

Am I reading correctly ASCARISS, a genus of roundworms, Ascaris. That sounds reasonable from a trip to the trenches.
