Hello friends,

I have purchased this coin and it just arrived in the post. Everything looks right, apart from the colour perhaps, but I wanted to pick your brains on whether you too think that this is a genuine 10 Yuan bullion coin. Diameter is 40mm, and weight is 31.3g. The coin in the catalogue is this: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces71394.html

And here is my coin:
After a preliminary examination, yours appears to look very good but there are also very good counterfeits. If you hold the obverse of the coin to your face and see your reflection clearly, that is a counterfeit. I am not implying that yours is countefeit but that is one way to be sure. Here are others ways to check authenticity.

Unfortunately, the Chinese attempt to counterfeit just about anything they think they can make money on.

unfortunately, yes. lots of Chinese collectors I know collect coins for investment purposes so they would buy anything that appears to be silver or gold and resell them at higher prices. Some of the collectors even slab their coins themselves (along with the labels etc.) in hopes of receiving a higher return.

Hi everyone,

in the past I did follow the advises on this website. that’s valuable tips and it would apply for many coins. Some did through some doubts and I gave up the purchase.

However, i‘ve purchased through the bank (I‘m expat in China)

You can purchase as

-a single coin. Never tried Not sure what you get.

-15, you have a plastic holder with 15 coins in a plastic caps& 15 certificates

-15, with individual box. Box comes empty and you have the same as above option. (was some stock left from 2022. order just arrived)

all that to say, at least from 2022, you can have legit coins with Box, certificate, no nipples in the plastic cap In the 2022. Can’t remember if the 2023 caps have them, they are back home. Can check over Christmas.

Comments on Mirror effect, not sure, they are shiny but I have no fakes to compare with.

diameter/thickness/weight and ring test and you should be ok. Magnet if you want but some fake silver coins get away with it.

2024 release is available but I found them expensiv e + 400RMB for 15 compared to 2023. I’ll wait if the price goes down.

have a good day.

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life

I love the silver pandas, but I'm always concerned about fakes.  There are some very, very good ones out there.

I'm inclined to believe that you have a fake one.  This is most noticeable on the reverse.
The 5 in the date seems a bit off.
The temple seems off too.  Almost like there's too much detail.
You can compare to the NGC scan here: https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/chinese-coin-prices-detail.aspx?lang=en-US&ChineseSetID=1491&subcat=silver-panda-coin-prices

Weight is a pretty good indicator too.  This should weigh 31g.  Anything other than this means it's counterfeit.

You can also try the drop / ping test if you have a true silver coin to compare it to.

A couple more articles from NGC:

well spotted Glorkar, the 5 in the first message doesn’t look good.

@presedinte if not done, you should get this coin checked. I also think it’s a fake.

Most Chinese Modern Forgeries are Fe/Ni or German SIlver (Cu/Zn/Ni). Hence the ping test. Weight is more often times irrelevant.
