It's a shame the BBC didn't spend a little longer researching the piece because they might have got their facts right.
According to Spink SCBC, the Leopard was otherwise known as the Florin and was valued at 3 shillings. The piece was known as the Leopard due to the crowned leopard featured on the obverse. Also introduced in 1344 were the Double Leopard (Double Florin at 6 shillings) and the Helm (Half-florin at 1s6d).
And no, they are not currently listed on Numista - a Double Leopard in VF is valued at £375,000!
