Hi all need help identifying this medallion / medal.
I spent the day searching the web and came up with various translated words either Chinese or Japanese.
One of the translations of the kanji across the top of medal is "Ministry of civil affairs sightseeing light memorial"
Unfortunately I was not able to obtain any info on this so asking for hopefully some one knows.
The original translation that my past mother had was "Sightseeing Golden Temple Kyoto Japan"
Sorry I cannot weigh the medallion/medal
date: unknown
diameter is 38mm
thickness is 2mm
Thanks
Rob
Thank you ZacUK that were able to assist with this query
It seems I was on the right track. I did find the golden bird on the temple and the temple pavilion's history.
The picture of the temple pavilion on the medallion looks a bit different than the photo of the temple that you and I have found.
I remember reading yesterday that the pavilion was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the 1950's. If so, this makes me think that the medallion was minted before the fire with a big question mark on that statement.
Would any one have an idea what the value of the medallion is and the year it was produced?
cheers
Rob
Hi ZacUK thanks again for your help.
Today I punched in a few of the names that are on what we thought is a sightseeing map on the back of the medallion into google maps and came up with a match for the Kyoto area.
So we have confirmed it to be a sightseeing map of the Kyoto area and not as I was thinking a map of the Kakakuji temple grounds.
The similarity to the map on the medallion is amazing considering that the train line is shown to be just above the Toji Temple.
I have also confirmed that the building on the face side of the medallion is the Kakakuji Golden Temple but I still think that it is the pavilion that was burnt down by one of the monks and then rebuilt in 1950's.

Hello.. I know this is an extremely old topic; But I have two similar but different medals with very close layouts to this particular kind of metal that I was looking for information on today; and I came across this topic, and grew very curious. Did you ever find out any other details about this particular medal, and its origin? Id love to know where these came from. I acquired mine several years ago from an antique shop as a matter of fact. And I always wanted to know more about them. I have one that looks identical to yours on the front, but with a slightly different back. And it actually says Kyoto on it. the other is of some sort of mountain, with a bunch of Japanese characters on it that I cant understand. but they look really cool. and Id love to know more about their origins, if anyone knows more.
I don't have a working camera right now, or I'd include some photos. No idea if anyone will even answer this given how old the thread is, but I figured its worth a try. Given there layout, Id say they absolutely had to come from the same creator.
I contacted the Japan Consulate and spoke with their representative who was very helpful.
The Medal is actually a tourist souvenir, no date is available, and they were very common for the tourist of the time to take home as a talking point and a memory of attending the particular area and local shrines. The medal as I found out is not worth very much if anything.
