anyone that collects IRAN banknotes tell me if the middle note is legitimate
from what i understand these Pahlavi overprints were a temporary measure until the new official Republic notes were produced
in 1980
should they be in NUMISTA catalogue as they were treated as common banknotes for that brief period On the middle one it looks to be cancelled with LIPSTICK ( not sure)i guess late in 1979 by the banks/govt
official 1980 overprint note at bottom
The middle note's red "X" looks post-production to me. I may be wrong but that's the 1st time I've seen that type of marking on the Shah. Yes, It does appear to be a cancelled note that may have slipped out of the central bank. It was a tumultuous time so anything's possible back then. The top (looks like P-107b 10,000 Rials & bottom 50R P-123b?) should be added to Numista (if they're not already added).

What does the text beside the middle note read?

Hi. Thanks for info the first and third note have been added to Numista
the lipstick note is 1979 and I was told by dealer in Tehran that they were crossed by the banks but remained in circulation until new overprints in 1980
i have seen several but only bought one
are you saying lipstick issue should be in Numista list
"are you saying lipstick issue should be in Numista list"
- I am sorry but I cannot answer that question. It would serve you well to ask one of the banknote referees for Iran.

The formal overprints were separate issues b/c they were done en masse & on sheets of unissued notes (to be used as issued currency). So it would be P-106a-d (but I cannot make out the signatures). I would then add the comment to describe the note as you have already done. Check with the appropriate referee what they think.

I do not think IRAN has a banknote referee
Like what Serial_Number_8 said there is many possibilities what happened. These are my assumptions.
  • The note was release into circulation before the revolution then after that the Shah was crossed out privately and was in use until the over print notes came out.
  • Secondly maybe they were sealed or in a strap in a bank during the revolution then the employees decided to cross the Shah out with whatever they have available.
  • Finally maybe the note survived being vandalised and maybe several years later when it was redeemed that is when the employees crossed out the Shah.

Here are some examples of defaced Iranian Shah notes.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.
Nice lot of notes
This is another lot of overprints that i picked up in Tehran in 2013----I stand to be corrected but i think they are religous events and they appear to be circulated, obviosly used as standard notes
It would be great to actually know what the event is for each note can anyone help
again should they be entered in Numista

All 4 notes are 100 rials 1981-86 sign 21 P#140a; Signature Dr. Mohsen Noorbakhsh, Dr. Hossein Namazi.
If the central bank did not do the overprinting, but just a bank did then I do not think the notes should be in Numista. Also, there has been some conversation about the religious overprints. But for the life of me I cannot recall. If they are not government applied, as are the Philippine overprints for example, then they should be treated as all other private overprints are, and not included in Numista. By all means provide proof, a scholarly article, a government link to suggest these are official overprints and they will be included.

Hi
All of these banknotes are of a pretty low value or not legal tender, so people overstamp them or deface it. I don't think these 100 rial banknotes are legit.
