Interesting legend styles / calligraphy on coinage

8 posts • viewed 264 times
While looking through my collection lately I found some interest in the style of the writing on them so I thought maybe it could be an interesting topic for this forum. So while I know a lot of more coins with nice calligraphy I dont own (like those nice gothic florins appearing more often in the additions threads lately) here I'am gonna post some examples from my collection first:

1. So the first coin from my collecting coming to my mind is this 5 Franc coin from Monaco having a real nice looking legend + the nice monogram on the reverse. The thing I dont like too much is this crude bust of Rainier III. - thats where I like the 1 Franc coin from around the same time much more:

2. This is one of my favorite legends from my ancient collection. During roman antiquity the style of the legends changed often and where unique from coin to coin due to the handmade dies but this one is really special having a style that could also fit pretty good on some modern metal or hard rock band covers:

3. So this one is a small one being only one word (the name of the commemorated city) but one of few in my collection with this gothic writing style:

So I hope this topic is interesting to you guys and that you can add some contributions showing what kind of calligraphy you really like to see on coinage.
Have a nice day colleagues.

So yeah.
This font is from an unknown country, It's such a fantasy.
The celebrations are approaching ten kilometers from my house( in three weeks , the pope was also at the celebrations), sent to this country the ruler of Byzantium at the request of the local ruler two brothers who created a font for the people who live here.
Here is an example of a preserved stamp - and the result of embossing into metal , this font is ....?? ( those who are interested know the riddle )
coin stamp

result of stamping - by hand

All very beautiful and Art Deco style.
At a quick glance, none of the lettering seems too interesting on this 1822 crown

Until you zoom in...
