Hello,

Is there a “guideline” for titles in the Exonumia category? I be be nice to add it to the new guidelines (which is also of excellent quality!).
It would also be nice to add the define titles in the guide : Google docs

I am reviewing all the Swiss Exonumia at the moment and several questions came to my mind.

1) For commemorative events, should the following be noted:
Medal - 100th anniversary of . . .
or
Medal - 100 years of . . .

2) How do you define a medal or a medallion?

3) Then, now that the token are sorted by type and the old categories will be removed, should we keep the token/medal type in the title? (example)
Car Wash Token - Landi Zola
or
Token - Landi Zola

These are just three questions that I have asked myself, but I imagine there are other issues that need to be addressed, so it would be good to have clear guidelines.

Regards,

According to the guide Google.docs "Numista exonumia.docx" these are all Exonumias among which are tokens, medals .. &c. .. and exonumias

Hello,

We don't have guidelines for exonumia yet. So I'll just give my opinion so far.

1. Probably we should keep the same rule as for coins: https://en.numista.com/numisdoc/articles/catalogue_guidelines.php#commemorated_event
So the format of the title would be "Medal - Albert Einstein" and not "Medal - 100th anniversary of the birth of Albert Einstein"

3. I'd recommend keeping the exact type of token in the title, even if it's already described in the field for the type: "Car Wash Token - Landi Zola". It would help more specifically for types that are more generic like "Access tokens", for which the title can be more specific: "Public Swimming Pool Token - Geseke (Youth)".
The two parts in that reply are >

1. Probably we ...

3. I'd recommend ...

What is the middle part?

2. ???

Or was it only 1 and 2 meant? 8)
Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins
I don't have an opinion on question #2.
2.
medal (plural medals)
I - A stamped metal disc used as a personal ornament, a charm, or a religious object.
II - A stamped or cast metal object (usually a disc), particularly one awarded as a prize or reward.
medallion (plural medallions)
I - A large medal, usually decorative.

- strange that medallions should be large the -on part denotes a diminutive, but to be honest my Latin is very bad
Quote: "Basteros"2) How do you define a medal or a medallion?

There is no simple answer, many will disagree.

A medal or medallion is generally struck (or cast) to commemorate an event, and often given away as an award.
It is accepted by some that a medallion is a large medal, usually decorative, as they are too large to be worn comfortably.
Although... many others call the pendant of a necklace a medallion. (Possibly just a colloquial term)

The only consensus is that all medallions are medals; could be best to avoid calling anything medallions.
(Unless specifically referred to by the manufacturer as a medallion)

Among the medals we must distinguish the stamped or cast metal object (usually a disc, round) pierced to be used as decoration or pendant with a ring
Medals celebrating an anniversary, an event or an award
The latter falling into the 3.2.5 token category while the former fall into the 2.1.3 category.
The medallion, round or oval, looks like jewelry
