I recently saw a set of US gold plated statehood quarters and, while doing some research, I also saw a set with holograms and wondered what you all think about sets like these. I know they are altered coins so are they considered an abomination? 🤣 I did notice they are not listed in the catalog so I assume they're not considered legit. I welcome your feedback.

Thank you in advance.

They are privately altered coins and often considered post mint damage so they don't belong in the catalog.
In many countries and maybe also in the US this would even void their face value not only their smaller the collection value.
Some people call such things 'Granny bait'. Meaning folks who buy birthday presents from ads in the color suppliments,

Since the subject was brought up. I got one for my birthday. German 1 Mark 1989 24 Karat Gold. Looks nice but what's the reason and what good is it? And I think I got a US one dollar that's silver and I don't see anything that there is such a thing.

It's all profit driven and implies "valuable" to those who don't know any better. I agree, some of these after market gold plated coins or otherwise altered, aftermarket or colorized coins can be very beautiful, but they add no real value to numismatists unless they came from the actual government mint. Canadian Mint colorized coins for instance. My family will often buy me aftermarket colorized American Silver Eagles and I am happy to get them as I collect them by date and mint. Perfect in every other way but I use acetone to remove the colorization after a while and then otherwise will have a absolutely beautiful specimen.
You know that you can remove this ugly colonization relatively easy?
