Are these coins real? (Silver 1 Rupee India)

Hi,

Can anyone please help identify if these coins are real or fake? I bought them from a local dealer who deals in old currency and was planning to purchase a couple of more but thought of verifying these before that.

Please note the U in Rupee in 1904 coin, it is a bit pressed. Also a patch on Edwards neck.

Also if you could help with what these are worth.

Thanks,
Mukul

Weigh them measure them put photpraph against a known genuine one check the substrait (material) its made of and if all that seems ok its make your mind up time.
both look fake to me.

Hi, thanks for looking. Can you please share what specifically you noticed so I can be careful next time?

Thanks

the lettering around George VI is very weak, poorly struck, or worn, yet the rim is very prominent.
same on reverse, weak almost faded line inside rim, yet rim is unworn.

On the Edward VII coin, the rims are uneven.
the surfaces on both sides look terrible, rough and brush marks all over the field, also weak struck lettering,
and that remarkable die crack on the E, this would be a famous variant but it is not.

accurate dimensions and weight will be informative.

Thanks Midnight, that was really very helpful. These were supposed to be my first silver coins, but seems all I gained is some experience :)
I'll check/compare the measurements and weight as well.

Thanks again,

I could be all wrong, but I have seen so many fakes I am always skeptical now.

Weight is the first step. You also want to look closely at the security edge which you didn't provide a photo of.https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces2470.html
I own many examples of this type of coin, and on first appearance yours look OK to me. I agree you should check the weights (should be close to 11.66 g), and the edges. Weights and diameters should always be posted when requesting identification or verification of coins.

The best way to find values is to check on EBay for recently sold examples. You can also check "book" values at NGCcoin.com, but these are generally considerably higher than real-life values.
Hi all,

I apologise for a late response. But before coming back, I wanted to perform the measurements and other tests using right tools, as you guys suggested. Sharing my observations below.

Edward VII coin 1904 one rupee
Diameter - 30.6mm - matches standard
Weight - 11.69GMS vs 11.66 standard
Ping test - good (checked against pure silver coins)
Magnet test - v good
Ice test - v good
Reeded edge - yes

George VI 1944 one rupee
Diameter - 30.5mm - matches standard
Weight - 11.66gms - matches standard
Magnet test - better than non-silver coin
Security edge - yes (attaching a couple of pics)

With this information, I believe these may not really be fake. At least I am convinced about their silver content.

Question: How much off can weight be, considering the variance for Edward coin?

Thanks again for your inputs.

Your coins sound quite genuine. I would not be concerned over a variance of three hundredths of a gram. Most fakes are off by several grams, or at least several tenths of a gram.
ok, looks like your good! the Heaton edge design is good indication too.
I am too skeptical perhaps.

Thanks Seeker and Midnight. I would say good to be skeptical and double check stuff. I am a bit relieved now and know things to look out for next time. 👍
