The isle of Ireland consists of 2 countries - one is part of the Commonwealth (Northern Ireland), & the other one should be back in the Commonwealth (Republic of Ireland).
Membership of the Commonwealth would be very beneficial for the Republic of Ireland - not only as a way of strengthening ties between both countries on the isle of Ireland, but also as a way of strengthening ties with the huge Irish diaspora who live in British Commonwealth countries, especially in Australia, Canada, & the U.K.
Of course, membership of the Commonwealth would help draw a line in the sand regarding the Republic of Ireland's poor relations with the U.K. prior to the late 1990's.
The Republic of Ireland would still remain a member state of the E.U. - considering both Cyprus & Malta are members of both the Commonwealth & the E.U..
Yes, you keep raising this political issue ... but I don't think we can help you with it. Please redirect this question to the Irish government to again get cosy with their former occupying empire
Just call me Bram
No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!

This postal order is of the same design type both before & after the declaration of the Republic;
The Dominion of Ireland was established on 29 December 1937, when the current Constitution come into effect to replace the 1922 Constitution of the Irish Free State.

the country known in British law as "Eire" ceased to be "part of His Majesty's dominions" (i.e. a member of the Commonwealth) on 18 April 1949 (the date that the Irish "Republic of Ireland Act 1948" came into force).
Becoming a republic, The Ireland was de facto excluded from the commonwealth as India was too.
Yet India reintegrated the Commonwealth some months later, unlike Ireland which did not request reinstatement.
Don't forget the political goal of Ireland : Unifying northern Irland and Ireland in an unique independent state.
So what would be the political gain from being a member of the Commonwealth ? that would bring back into the game the former colonialist, and would push back the future unification in an infinite time.
In another hand, I the UK says : Ok the coloniaist era is done, please reunify Northern Irland at the sole condition that the future united state will be a member of the Commonwealth, I bet Ireland will sign with two hands
There is nothing remotely colonial at all regarding the Commonwealth - as each country is fully independent & refrains from interfering in the internal affairs of one another, unless one Commonwealth country requires assistance from another Commonwealth country.
There are other international organisations that are organised along similar lines to the Commonwealth - La Francophonie, being the most well-known of these.

Ladies and gentlemen numismatists. Strongly but really strongly political topic -badly timed. The principle of not asking political questions applies.
You either agree with the UN Charter on the Rights of Nations to Self-Determination or you don't .
Inappropriately...... , the only benefit for this otherwise highly intelligent communityis a prerequisite for the creation of new beautiful Irish coins , and coins of beautiful proud and brave people of the Celtic nation from their island.
I do not mind the debate, but I respect the principles of the community, whether to delete at the very beginning of the debate or to agree on a thread as a separate political debate with all the consequences.
Have a nice day and wish you health and well-being.

Elmerob, please refrain from commenting on this topic. Just let the rest of the world decide what is good for your country/island.

My sincerest apologies. I should have known better.

All I will say, is read some history books, read about Cromwell in 1650, the flight of the earls in 1607, An Gorta Mor (The great Famine) 1845 - 1849 and the struggle for Irish Independence 1881 - 1922.
Get educated instead of spurting off Ignorant rubbish.
