Some people put coins they don’t have into their collections in order to look better though. I think that they would have to be certified by a 3rd party first.
They’re almost certainly just joking. 6% of the people that claim to have the Saint-Gaudens double eagle claim they have a 1933, even though only 13 are known and only 1 is in private hands. Most of these have to be discounted as jokes/trolls.

I’ve thought about that as well. I think with incredibly rare coins there should be some sort of verification to prove you actually have it before you can add it to your collection to prevent trolling.
